You can check out the effectiveness of the Actiontec firewall with
something like:
nmap -sS -vv -p 1-65535 placeyour.internet.ip.here
That'll tell you where you stand on incoming traffic.
One would assume the modem's firewall does nothing to prevent outgoing
traffic.
When my Linux box was my interface for Internet connections, I started
reading up on ipchains and iptables (which, I understand, can be used to
manually build a firewall), but Mandrake has some kind of a built-in
firewall that can be enabled with a wizard and laziness got the best of me.
As I'm now connecting via a Windows 98 box, it has become kind of a moot
point.
