I don't think the Mac is pushing Linux out of the picture at all, nor
would I want it to be that way. They are good, for the most part, at
different things, and have a completely different design philosphy behind
them. Now, a lot of people who were Linux users might be using OS X now
instead, but its probably because Linux wasn't really right for them as it
stood. If anything I think Linux is in better shape than it ever has
been. Its gaining market share against Windows NT and higher end Unices,
as well as keeping people from doing the Unix>NT migration. OS X will
probably find itself in a similar market position from that standpoint,
but I still think the dynamics of each are pretty different. Of course,
OS X, because of its heritage, is much closer to a free Unix than OS 9 -
but that doesn't mean that the other OSes are going anywhere. Don't
forget, it takes a significant hardware purchase for most to run Mac OS.

I don't think the mac is really pushing Windows users out either, despite
the fact that a lot of Windows users are coming over. They are probably
losing almost as many as they gain (declining market share in K12
education - stupid as it is - comes to mind). Long term, however, I think
that the fact that 'geeks' are flocking to the OS (combined with its good
dev tools) can only make it that much more likely that top notch
applications will come from the Mac programmer base and not the Windows
one. When that happens, the needle will move a little more toward the
Mac. The Apple stores are also a great idea. Steve Jobs goal of 10
percent is a pretty good one, and will hopefully be enough to ensure that
people can still have a choice in platforms. 20 percent is probably
better, however.
