You could just solder the cable directly in but it's messy, less reliable, and
the connector makes it easy to disassemble for transport. I have a couple and
supplies for making cable if you need one.

Neither, the Yuban/Pringles antennas act like a cross between a Yagi and
waveguide. They collect and focus the electromagnetic energy into the end of
the cable which transmits the signal to the receiver built into the 802.11 card.

Depends on how well you construct it and if the diameter is correct for the
frequency you are trying to use. At best, you should be able to get a
directional connection up to about 5 miles. Add an old Primestar/DirectTV dish
and push that to over 12 miles.
