[Tfug] When RTFM is not enough

Hi,
    I got a new machine with linux pre-installed:

       Distribution: Mandrake 8.2
       Kernel:       2.4.18

One question at a time. I'm trying to find out where everything is,
and older distributions used something called "locate" with "updatedb"
What's used now? 

   Yes, I have the manual in an HTML tarball version, but the answer
to my questions is the needle in a haystack. Also, I'm an old-fashioned
guy and find seamless GUI's frustrating sometimes.
